DAILIES
Eye Opener (1950)
Our great triumph was not because of our victory over alcohol, but because of our complete defeat. It was only when we were beaten to our knees that we sought the only help that could save us. So we came into AA, not as boastful conquerors but as cringing and bloody casualties of an unequal fight. We were whipped; we knew it; we gave not a damn who else knew it. For us, it was unconditional surrender. There were and could be no reservations.

Vernon Howard’s SECRETS OF LIFE
“Now, I’ll tell you very briefly right now why you don’t solve any
of your problems. This is the key clue to beginning to solve them.
It’s your habit not to.
Now think of the word ‘habit’ in connection with what we’re talking
about. You know what a habit is, something that repeats itself over
and over, all the time, same thing happening. You have the habit of
having difficulties, of having these inner tornadoes. It has become
a habit, and it has got such a hold on to you that you never even
question its necessity, its power at all.
See, we come back to that word ‘questioning.’ Why don’t you start to
bring yourself in to what we are talking about now and simply say,
‘You know, that’s not a bad point. Why don’t I begin to question
the habit I have of feeling bad, of feeling scared of other people,
people who have power. Why don’t I begin to question the automatic
falling under the fear? Why don’t I begin to question that?’
That in itself would be just a little bit different kind of an
action, which would not be the same as completely falling under
the emotional avalanche and saying, ‘Well here I go again, I might
as well do what I always do. I get hurt and then I cry or I scream
out and I look for someone to blame, look for someone to hate.
Now look, I’m talking to you – what are you going to do about your
very bad habit of loving pain?”

DAILY REFLECTIONS

DO I HAVE A CHOICE?
The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink. Our so-called will power becomes practically nonexistent.
— ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 24
My powerlessness over alcohol does not cease when I quit drinking. In sobriety I still have no choice — I can’t drink.
The choice I do have is to pick up and use the “kit of spiritual tools” (Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 25). When I do that, my Higher Power relieves me of my lack of choice—and keeps me sober one more day. If I could choose not to pick up a drink today, where then would be my need for A.A. or a Higher Power?

A COURSE IN MIRACLES
Lesson 8
My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.
This idea is, of course, the reason why you see only the past. No one really sees anything. He sees only his thoughts projected outward. The mind’s preoccupation with the past is the cause of the misconception about time from which your seeing suffers. Your mind cannot grasp the present, which is the only time there is. It therefore cannot understand time, and cannot, in fact, understand anything.

“Youth, like a magic bird, has flown away
He sang a little morning-hour in May
Sang to the rose, his love, that too is gone–
Whither is more than you or I can say.”
