The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity to
Accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And the Wisdom to know the difference.
We were now at Step Three.
 Many of us said to our Maker, as we understood Him:
“God, I offer myself to Thee – to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the
bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them
may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy
will always!”
We thought well before taking this step making sure we were ready; that we could at last abandon
ourselves utterly to Him.
Seventh Step Prayer
-The Seventh Step Prayer is from page 76. The Big Book
   When ready, we say something like this:
“My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now
remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you
and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen.”
We have then completed Step Seven.

St Francis Prayer
-From Chapter 11 of “Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions”
“Lord, make me a channel of they peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.”

==============================

Nature will not let us stay in any one place for too long. She will let us stay just long enough to gather the experience necessary to the unfolding and advancement of the soul. This is a wise provision, for should we stay there too long, we would become too set, too rigid, too inflexible. Nature demands change in order that we may advance.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 207 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
“I bless the world because I bless myself.”

The words that stand out to me in this lesson are, “accept God’s boundless Love for me.” This world is an attempt to limit God’s Love. Bodies were made to separate off parts of God into isolated individual segments which do not share all of God’s Love. The separate identities we call bodies cannot know boundless Love because the bodies themselves are boundaries.

To be boundless is to be united with all. It is to be one. Identifying with the body automatically brings with it a belief in being unworthy of all God’s boundless Love. As I am able to accept more of God’s boundless Love, I bless the world because I bless myself. It is not God Who limits Love. It is simply my mistaken belief in an image of myself that could never be true or real.

The Course is teaching me how to forgive myself for having made up this image and let it go. As I let go of the false image, I open my heart to recognize the Presence of God that never left. God is truly in everything I see. God’s Presence has nothing to do with form. God is in everything I see because God is boundless and is therefore everywhere. To experience this, I must let go of all meanings I have given forms. These meanings interfere with Christ’s vision, which sees God’s Love everywhere.

Holy Spirit, help me bless myself today by helping me let go of the false meanings and images I have made in this world so I may see the Light of God where it is, which is everywhere. Thus I will bless the world because I bless myself.

God (Love) abides in my heart. Love abides in everyone’s heart. This is what is real. For me to recognize this is to bless myself and my brother. I need but turn to Love and I will see this is true.

As I turn to Love, the false concepts of bodies and differences fall away. As I turn to Love, my belief in weakness and separation from God falls away. As I turn to Love, I see my innate strength. I feel God’s Love. Because God’s Love is continuous, it is everywhere. The false images disappear in the ever expanding extension of God’s Love. Opening to this truth is blessing the world and blessing myself.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 208 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
“The peace of God is shining in me now.”

This world was made as a fence to keep God out. One of the chief ego mechanisms to keep awareness of God’s Presence hidden is to keep us preoccupied with all the forms found in this world of separation. As long as the ego can keep us busy with endless pursuits that cannot bring us the peace of God, the ego thought system remains in tact.

In this world, most, if not all, of the hours of the day are spent directly or indirectly taking care of the body, which we believe is our identity. We are either working to earn money to pay for food, clothing or housing for the body, or we are spending time giving it rest, bathing it, exercising it, preening it, trying to make it “acceptable,” whatever that means to us.

When we are not actively involved in these things, we worry about things that could happen to the body, so we build defenses to protect against what might happen. This image that we have of ourselves is so fragile that it seems it can be damaged by as little as a word or a momentary glance, which can throw us into fear or guilt in an instant. All of this keeps our attention on a frantic and frenzied agenda to protect what we think we are.

Yet this image has nothing to do with our true reality, with our Self as God created us. This is why we are asked to repeat many times a day for 20 days, “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.” This repetition will help us loosen our identification with the false image we have held of ourselves. Each time we can take a moment to be still, to set aside the frenzy of the world ever so little, we move a step closer to recognizing the peace of God that is shining in us right now.

As we can still our minds and feel the peace of God, we feel His safety and His strength. The body does not need our protection. It will reflect the safety we know when we remember the peace of God that is shining in our hearts.

We are not asked to give up our identification with the body in one fell swoop, for the seeming sacrifice would be too frightening. We are simply asked to practice giving our attention to the fact that we are not a body. This practice will gently wean us from thinking we are a body to recognizing that we are in fact Love’s extension, wholly safe in Love.

While we remain in the dream of this world, we will continue doing things to care for the body. But we will recognize more and more that many of the things we thought would keep us safe or make us feel better really accomplish nothing. And so our life will become simpler and easier. Gradually more of our time is used for awakening and serving the awakening of others. Our brothers become less and less adversaries and more and more seen as friends and companions, helping us return Home. I am grateful to be reminded that the peace of God is shining in me now.

The merry-go-round of this world will continue to go round and round until we choose to stop it. On this merry-go-round it feels like a swirl of activity, but we are really going nowhere. We are going round and round, repeating the past over and over until we decide to step off and give our mind a rest from the ego thought system. Once we step off, there is quiet. There is stillness. We can experience the peace of God. We can hear the Holy Spirit and be aware of Its returning us to the truth.

The doorway through which we return Home is through quieting our minds. When our minds are filled with the ego thought system, there is no room left to feel the peace of God. The peace of God is felt when all that is laid down. The peace of God is eternal. It is always there, waiting for our return. The peace of God is what we are.

We may step back on the merry-go-round, but this time we have a new purpose. Everything is given a new meaning. We see everything differently. We realize how important it is to frequently step off and go to that quiet place in our minds where our Holy Spirit brings us peace and understanding.

Our gratitude overflows as we learn to let go of fear thoughts and return to the Love we are. We remember we are not a body, we are free. Nothing has changed. We are eternally extensions of Love and nothing else. Just Love eternally. In truth, we do live happily ever after as one, as Love.

Pg. xxvi THE DOCTOR’S OPINION We believe, and so suggested a few years ago, that the action of alcohol on these chronic alcoholics is a manifestation of an allergy; that the phenomenon of craving is limited to this class and never occurs in the average temperate drinker. These allergic types can never safely use alcohol in any form at all; and once having formed the habit and found they cannot break it, once having lost their self-confidence, their reliance upon things human, their problems pile up on them and become astonishingly difficult to solve.

In nearly all cases, their ideals must be grounded in a power greater than themselves, if they are to re- create their lives.

We feel, after many years of experience, that we have found nothing which has contributed more to the rehabilitation of these men than the altruistic* movement now growing up among them.

*altruism–1. unselfish interest in the welfare of others

Men and women drink essentially because they like the effect produced by alcohol.

They are restless, irritable and discontented, unless they can again experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks—-drinks which they see others taking with impunity.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 209 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
“I feel the Love of God within me now.”
I feel the Love of God when I recognize that the Love of God is everywhere and is eternal. The Love of God is all That is. Receiving and giving the Love of God is all that can be truly received and given. Inherent in accepting the Love of God is giving the Love of God. Inherent in accepting and giving the Love of God is feeling the Love of God.

There is only one Love and this Love is universal. It is continuous. It is always present. It is all that is real. We all are mind that lives in the eternal and ever-present Love of God. Experiencing the Love of God is what is natural. In fact it is the only natural thing in the world. It is the only reality. Anything outside of God’s Love is illusion.

Accepting and giving the Love of God is really all we ever could do because It is all we ever Are. It is our life. It is our totality. It is our very beingness. It is our one Self. Am I willing to accept and give my one Self today? Today is for practice in accepting and giving the Love of God. Nothing else is more important because nothing else is real.

When I identify with being a body in a world of separate bodies and forms, I am identifying with the ego’s attempt to limit Love. The ego is the idea of rejecting the equality, the all inclusiveness and limitlessness of God’s Love. This is why it is important to proclaim again and again until I fully believe that I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.

Love cannot be limited and be Itself. Thus I cannot feel the Love of God within me as long as I believe in a limited image of myself. Because God’s Love is limitless, it is His Love within me that sets me free.

Love is forever extending. To know my freedom in God’s Love I must extend His Love, equally and unequivocally. That is the only way Love can be extended. It is the only way I can know God’s Love, feel It and know my Self.

The body is not what I am. I do not have to accept the ego’s purpose of limitation for the body. As I dis-identify with the body as what I am, I am free to give it a different purpose. As I strengthen my identification with the Love of God as What I am, the body’s purpose now becomes to be the means by which I extend His Love to all my brothers.

The body then becomes His Voice, His hands, His feet to carry and express His Love to all who believe they are limited by a body. As I use the body to teach Love, I learn that I am Love. The Love of God within me sets me free. I remember I am still as God created me.

All these, and many others, have one symptom in common:
they cannot start drinking without developing the phenomenon of craving.
This phenomenon, as we have suggested,
may be the manifestation of an allergy which differentiates these people,
and sets them apart as a distinct entity.
It has never been, by any treatment with which we are familiar,
permanently eradicated.
The only relief we have to suggest is entire abstinence.
I earnestly advise every alcoholic to read this book through,

ACIM Workbook Lesson 210 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
“I choose the joy of God instead of pain.”

What stands out to me in this lesson is that God’s Will for me is joy and only joy. If I am not experiencing joy, I must be choosing against God’s Will. Pain is my own idea, not a Thought of God. All the discomfort I experience — stress, anxiety, impatience, feeling hurried — are all the result of choosing against God’s Will. Choosing God’s Will must bring me joy because that is what His Will is.

Is it a sacrifice to accept the joy of God? Part of me must think it is because part of my mind tenaciously hangs on to this image I have made of myself that never feels quite secure or safe and seems to need to be constantly alert for hazards of some kind. This image of a vulnerable self hides from my awareness the Self that knows and is the joy of God.

The joy of God is already in me. In fact, the joy of God is me. I don’t need to do anything to experience His joy. I only need to stop maintaining a false image that obscures awareness of my true Self. That is why I must continue to repeat, “I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.” As I reinforce this focus more and more, the false image of a limited self softens and fades. The way is gradually cleared to see the joyous Self God created one with Him. As I withdraw identification with the limitations of a body, I am free to choose the joy of God instead of pain.

I am willing today to continue to practice remembering I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me. I can choose the joy of God instead of pain. This choice is simply the choice to be what I am in truth. I am deeply grateful for these lessons, which help me release a false self-image and clear the way for return to my Self as God created me.

This morning I woke up with a sore muscle in my shoulder. In today’s lesson I am reminded that pain is my own idea. It is not a Thought of God. This is one more place where I need to open my mind to the healing presence of the Holy Spirit. The pain in my shoulder is an effect of a thought apart from Him and from His Will. My job now is to open my mind to the Holy Spirit’s healing perceptions and let myself be led to a change of mind.

On my own, I do not know. The Holy Spirit is the healer and the healing needs to happen in my mind. The sore shoulder is merely an effect of a thought still residing in my mind. Pain is not of God. It is through forgiveness or letting go of some form of thought of separation that needs to be loosened and undone in my mind.

Holy Spirit, You know the way. I am willing to relax and open to Your healing Light. This is what I choose instead of pain. I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me. Today I choose to remember this and return to it again and again to heal my mind.

Nothing more was required of me to make my beginning.
I saw that growth could start from that point.

Pg. 14,15 My friend had emphasized the absolute necessity

Particularly was it imperative to work with others as he had worked with me.
Faith without works was dead, he said.

he could not survive the certain trials and low spots ahead.
If he did not work, he would surely drink again,

ACIM Workbook Lesson 211 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.”
“I am the holy Son of God Himself.”
What stands out to me in this lesson are the words, “in silence and in true humility…” This reminds me that in order to seek God’s glory and see it everywhere as my one Self, I must become aware of the ego’s chatter and be willing to let it go. I must let go of trying to make something other than God’s universal Love real.

“In silence” means choosing to quiet the ego mind and in true humility recognize all ego thoughts of individuality really mean nothing. Thinking I can really make something other than universal Love is arrogance. True humility does not try to imagine or make real something other than the one Self as we were created. This lesson helps me practice letting go of these absurd ideas of separation from unity, from our communion in God. Today’s lesson helps me remember we all are always in communion with our one Self.

My practice today is being willing to remember what is real. My job today is to practice true humility. My job today is to let the truth return to my awareness. The truth is not hiding. My job today is to let go of my denial of the truth of our one, universal Self. My job today is to remember I am not a body. I am free. I remain as God created me. The truth is true and nothing else is true.

I am willing to let my mind be filled with awareness of God’s Presence today. What a wonderful practice. What a wonderful opportunity I have today and every day.
This lesson teaches the opposite of what most of us believe about ourselves. “Holy” and “glory” are not words we associate with what we think we are. Guilty and unworthy seem much more appropriate to us because of what we think we are.

Yet these attributes we believe about ourselves must be arrogant because this lesson tells us that to recognize our holiness and glory we must seek in true humility. This is the opposite of what the ego teaches, that humility is to see ourselves as debased and unworthy of anything but condemnation.

Gratefully the Course teaches us that God does not and never has condemned. His Love for us remains unchanged by any of our wild imaginings of a separate self. So today’s lesson is another step in the reversal of the beliefs I have held about myself. It leads me toward recognition of What I am in truth. In that recognition I see my brothers as my Self, one with me, sharing God’s Love and Light, sharing His glory and holiness. I can only recognize this as I recognize my brothers are one with me. Seeing myself as separate or alone blocks all awareness of my holiness and unity with God.

To see this unity, I must let go of all judgment. That is why it is so important to take each thought of condemnation to the Holy Spirit and be willing to receive His vision in place of that false perception.

Holy Spirit I open my mind to you today, that I might see the holiness and glory in my brother and therefore in myself. Help me see past body images to the Love that is the essence of everyone and everything, for it is this I desire to recognize in myself. Thank you Holy Spirit for Your strength and support and trust in me.

Almost none of us liked the self-searching, the leveling of pride, the confession of shortcomings which the process requires for its successful consummation.
   The great fact is just this, and nothing less: That we have had deep and effective spiritual experiences which have revolutionized our whole attitude toward life, toward our fellows and toward God’s universe. The central fact of our lives today is the absolute certainty that our Creator has entered into our hearts and lives in a way which is indeed miraculous. He has commenced to accomplish those things for us which we could never do by ourselves.
   We were in a position where life was becoming impossible, and if we had passed into the region from which there is no return through human aid, we had but two alternatives: One was to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we could; and the other, to accept spiritual help.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 212 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.”
“I have a function God would have me fill.”
The function of Love is to extend Love. God created me as Love and so my function is to extend Love. I don’t extend Love when I don’t remember What I am. I don’t remember What I am when I attempt to replace What I am with illusions of separation from What I am. I am set free when I am willing to lay these illusions down.

When the ego thoughts are quieted, God, Which is Love, is there. God is the only Reality. God is freedom. God is joy. God is oneness and Love. If I am not recognizing this, I will feel bound and limited and separate from my Identity. In truth, God is my constant Companion because I am God’s extension. It is only when I return to my original function of extending Love that I find the freedom and peace that is in me.

I get what I desire and focus on. Today I seek only to fulfill my function as an extension of God’s Love. Only this brings me happiness. Only this sets me free. Letting go of illusions and extending only Love is my function today.

The Course says forgiveness is Love’s reflection in this world. Thus forgiveness is the way I fulfill my function in this world. Forgiveness is letting go of illusions. It clears the way for Love to be extended. It frees me to be the Love I was created to be.

Illusions are vain because they have no real effect. But if I believe illusions are real, I will believe reality is unreal and so the reality of Love will be lost to me. It is impossible to believe in two realities. Whatever I believe to be real blocks everything else from my awareness. If I want to experience the peace and joy and Love of God, I must let go of my belief in another reality in which God (Love) is not welcome.

This world was made as a place where God is not welcome. To be free of it, I must forgive myself for imagining a world without God and I must forgive God for not giving me what He could not give. God could not give me special love because Love is given equally by Its very nature.

When I experience true forgiveness, I experience an outpouring of Love, a sense of unity and joining with my brother. I see us as the same and my heart is filled with joy and gratitude. When I fall back into old habits of judgment, that joyous feeling fades. But the memory of it reminds me I really do want to fulfill the function God has given me. That is where I find freedom and joy.

Each experience of forgiveness strengthens my resolve to take every thought of condemnation, every judgment, to the Holy Spirit for Him to shine His loving Light upon it so I can see the reality beyond the illusion I mistakenly believed. Thus I fulfill the function God would have me fill and I receive His gift of happiness, which I cannot help but share with everyone.

True happiness is sharing. Holy Spirit, help me see with Your vision today that I might remember the freedom of being the Love I was created to be.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 213 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.”
“All things are lessons God would have me learn.”
It seems most of the lessons we learn in life are learned from pain. Our lessons teach us what we don’t want to do in order to avoid pain more than what to do to experience happiness. With this as our history, the statement, “All things are lessons God would have me learn” can easily carry the connotation that God’s lessons are painful. But this interpretation is simply our own projection of the past. God’s lessons are miracles that free us from our self-taught lessons of pain. God would have us learn lessons that lead us out of pain.

Yet the ego whispers and sometimes proclaims loudly that God’s lessons require sacrifice. The ego would want us to believe we must give up what is valuable if we are to learn of God. From the ego’s perspective, this is correct, because what the ego values is really nothing, meaningless.

If we are to experience what is truly meaningful — the Love of God — we do have to give up our investment in the empty promises of specialness offered by the ego. But we give up nothing in order to gain everything. This the ego does not tell us because when we give up the desire for specialness, we give up the ego. Without our investment in the values of the ego, it has no power, no substance. The ego’s only “control” over us comes from our attachment to the ego’s teachings.

We are not asked to give up this attachment in one gut wrenching battle in which all we think is important is ripped from our clutching hands. Rather, every moment is offered, gently and lovingly, as a lesson from God in which we learn to see what is valueless and what has true value. This is the miracle, the transformed perception.

When we recognize what is valueless, there is no sense of loss in laying it down. It is done with happy laughter, for we already see the joyous alternative God has offered in its place. Today I resign as my own teacher. I choose to learn God’s lessons that I may be free to live in His Love and peace.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 198 Insights
“Only my condemnation injures me.”
I am only tempted to condemn what appears to be in a world outside me when I forget the world is a dream coming from my mind. When I make the world of the ego real, it is sinking in clearer and clearer that this is an unforgiveness occurring in my mind. This is where forgiveness is needed — in my own mind. Forgiveness means letting go of the belief in separation. When I get too wrapped up in the dream, I may think judgment or condemnation of what I see as outside me may help or be the answer. When I make the dream real, I have forgotten “Only my condemnation injures me.”

It is only when I am willing to quiet my mind and listen for Holy Spirit’s perspective of oneness that the pain of condemning something or someone in a world “outside” will subside. Being willing to open to the Holy Spirit is the only answer that will really be successful. The more I recognize this, the faster I will let go of making the dream of separation appear to be real. “To every apprehension, every care, and every form of suffering: ‘I will forgive and this will disappear.’” (W-pI.193.13:3-4) Forgiveness, or letting go of illusions, is the secret to my freedom from suffering.

The times when I have truly forgiven, truly recognized there really was nothing to forgive, have brought me deep peace, quiet joy and uplifted me with Love. It was a great relief. I felt free as a feather, floating in a gentle breeze. It astounds me that with these experiences, I don’t go searching for all unforgiving thoughts to bring them to the Holy Spirit to be undone so I can continue to experience the freedom and ecstasy of forgiveness. There is no greater high than true forgiveness. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.

And yet there is a part of my mind that does not believe I am worthy of such a gift. And so it goes searching for thoughts of unforgiveness, but not to bring them to healing. Instead it uses these thoughts to further justify condemnation and prove unworthiness. This part of my mind treasures its privacy and isolation. It would rather suffer the pain of guilt from condemnation than join with all Love and lose its special, unique identity. This is the core belief, the core unforgiveness that lies beneath all the layers of unforgiven events and thoughts.

The ego would use the fact that I still have judgmental thoughts, I still experience guilt, as proof that I am weak and deserve condemnation. The Holy Spirit does not believe this one instant. The Holy Spirit sees my true Self and knows all these other thoughts I believe I hold are just illusions. aSo with a kindly smile, He offers me His hand to give me His strength and remind me I am not alone. With His strength, I can forgive each unforgiving thought, lay it down and let it go.

With His guidance, I will begin to see the sameness of these mistaken thoughts. At first they are forgiven one by one. But as I begin to see what they all have in common, the forgiveness of a single incident can reverberate through my mind, for I recognize more and more thoughts that are the same and are forgiven as one. The path to freedom accelerates. Today I would remember forgiveness is the only thing I want. And so I will remember forgiveness is the only thing I want to give. It is my own forgiveness that sets me free.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 199 Insights
“I am not a body. I am free.”
The more I work with the Course, the more I realize how much of my time is focused on the body and its seeming needs. I see that in the ego’s hands the body is a powerful distraction to divert my attention from focusing on what will truly bring me peace and happiness. The more I practice letting the Holy Spirit guide me through my day, the more I recognize the things I thought I needed to make me happy or comfortable or safe are really unnecessary.

As I place my trust more and more in the Holy Spirit and in God’s Love, I feel less and less need for outer forms. I still need to eat. I still need to have clothes to keep me warm in cold weather. I still think I need a house to shelter me from the weather. But the form these things take is less and less important. I am more free in each moment to receive the blessing of the moment without judgment.

There is a growing trust in my heart that I always have what I need when I need it; I always know what I need to know, when I need to know it. Life becomes increasingly simple and more of my time is focused on following Holy Spirit’s lead. Practicing remembering “I am not a body. I am free” helps reinforce this focus, leading me onward toward greater and greater freedom. I will continue this practice today, for I know true and lasting happiness lies in it. I am grateful for this message from the Voice for God today.

In paragraph 6 of this lesson it says, “The Holy Spirit is the home of minds that seek for freedom.” (6:1) Notice it doesn’t say’ bodies’ or ‘individuals’ or ‘persons.’ It says minds. This reinforces the fact that I am not an individual person — I am mind. I am thought. I am an idea in the Mind of God.

In paragraph 1 it says, “The mind can be made free when it no longer sees itself as in a body, firmly tied to it and sheltered by its presence.” (1:4) This means that the sleeping Son of God, which is really mind, can be made free as it (mind) no longer sees itself (mind) as in a body.

It is being reinforced in this lesson that all the separate bodies found in this dream of separation are all really the same mind, all joined as one mind. We are learning we are not tied to the body or made safe by its continuing presence in the dream. We are formless mind unbound by the laws (false ideas) the ego (belief in separation) made up.

The way we free ourselves from belief that we are tied to a body is to open our minds to the Holy Spirit to hear the truth about our real Identity. As we are ready to open to the truth, the Holy Spirit shows us that the body is illusion, just a made up fabrication… a dream. Under the Holy Spirit’s guidance we use the body as a useful tool, a vehicle used only for God’s plan of awakening from the dream.

I agree with the above about beginning to recognize the things that are unnecessary in my life. Naturally, because a part of me still believes I am a body, I still need to eat, stay warm, etc., but since I’ve started the Course, my priorities have changed and I think those unnecessary things that I’m beginning to recognize are the “barriers” the Course speaks of; those things that keep me from knowing the truth about myself and my brothers.

These barriers are the ego’s way of attempting to distract me and keep me focused on things the body seems to need. And because those things change from day to day or are in constant need of being replaced, repaired, or whatever, my state of mind varies from day to day, depending on my seeming needs.

I try to think of the Holy Spirit sort of like a child would think of an imaginary friend. He goes where I go, and I try to remember to ask His opinion about any decisions I need to make, or I tell Him my deepest, darkest secrets so He can see what I see and correct my distorted perception. God grant me the serenity to
Accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And the Wisdom to know the difference.
We were now at Step Three.
 Many of us said to our Maker, as we understood Him:
“God, I offer myself to Thee – to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the
bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them

We thought well before taking this step making sure we were ready; that we could at last abandon
ourselves utterly to Him.

The mind is a magnet and we attract that with which we identify the self.
In order to get the most out of life we must learn consciously to
change many of our habitual thought patterns.
This is not easy, for our old thought patterns cling to us with great tenacity,
but, being thought patterns, they can be reversed. If you are filled with fear,
refill yourself with faith, for faith always overcomes fear.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 200 Insights
“There is no peace except the peace of God.”
Fully accepting “There is no peace except the peace of God” simplifies life immensely. To find comfort, I do not need to try to organize outer circumstances to meet conditions I think will bring me peace. Peace cannot be found in outer conditions. I do not need to find a certain relationship to be happy and at peace. Peace cannot be found in a relationship with an image I perceive as outside of me. All the efforts to make external conditions that will make me happy and comfort me and bring me peace can never succeed. There is no peace to be found there.

As long as I believe there is an “other,” there is the potential for conflict. The peace of God is one because One is all there is. We are all part of that One. I simply need to let go of searching for peace where it cannot be found and peace will dawn upon my mind automatically, for it is already there. This means anything that seems to disturb my peace of mind is only disturbing because of the meaning I have given it. The disturbance is only in my mind.

This is good news, because if the disturbance is only in my mind, it is totally in my hands to let it go. I have the power in every moment to choose the peace of God. I need only forgive myself for imagining there was something else and let it go. What’s more, I have a powerful Friend in my mind, the Holy Spirit, Who shares His strength and vision with me to help me forgive and let go. I am never alone, ever. And I am glad and thankful this is so.

In this lesson Jesus makes it clear what to ask for. In paragraph 3 he tells us, “Yet you can ask as easily for love, for happiness, and for eternal life in peace that has no ending. Ask for this, and you can only win. To ask for what you have already must succeed. To ask that what is false be true can only fail. Forgive yourself for vain imaginings.”

As I learn to ask for the peace of God instead of trying to make this world real, I am asking for union rather than separation. As I learn to ask for the peace of God, I do not try to change the world. I simply realize it is not really there. I realize what I am seeing comes from my desire to see separation.

As I change what I desire to see with the help of the Holy Spirit, I will see unity where I once saw separation. I will see there is really only one mind where I once saw separate bodies. I will be led to experience the peace of God.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 201 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
“I trust my brothers, who are one with me.
To the Holy Spirit, what is true about one brother is true about every brother. There are no differences. There is no specialness in Holy Spirit’s sight.

Today my practice is to see every brother as the Holy Spirit sees him. That is how I return Home. That is how I remember the truth in myself. My brother is not his or her body. Everyone is free. Everyone is still as God created them. No one is their mask. No one is an individual ‘self.’

My lesson today is to trust the truth in my brother. I am learning to practice seeing past the false identity today and every day. This is my pathway Home to freedom. This is my pathway to happiness and everlasting peace. The truth of one united Mind is true and nothing else is true. I have another day before me to practice again remembering this truth.

In this world it seems impossible to really trust anyone. It seems there is always the possibility that their interests will conflict with mine in some way and a friend becomes an adversary. This is exactly why this lesson is needed. The reason we feel we cannot trust is because the trust is misplaced. Of course we cannot trust an illusion. Illusions can shift and change with the slightest whim. The body is an illusion. In this world, when we speak of trusting people, it is usually in terms of what they do with their bodies because we identify them with their bodies.

As I practice remembering that I am not a body, I am free, I am still as God created me, I must also remember the same is true about my brother. Then the most natural thing in the world is to trust my brother because I see him as one Mind — the same Mind as I am.

When I accept and know I am as God created me, I know I am absolutely trustworthy. What God creates is Love and nothing else, so I must be Love and nothing else. Love is forever Itself, unchanging, forever giving, eternally one. That is What I am.

Trust in Love is fully justified. And because What I am is What my brother is as well, trust in the truth about him is fully justified. If I am tempted to see him as anything other than Love, to identify him with his body, then it is time for me to declare, “This thought I do not want. I choose instead to trust my brother, who is one with me.” When I can do this without reservation of any kind, my heart will be filled with the joy and peace of God, for I will have remembered Him in my brother. Together we return Home.

The few sentences of this review lesson have the power to lead me Home. I need only accept them wholly, believe them to be true, and I will know my freedom. I will know my Identity as an extension of Love.

I was asking Holy Spirit for a way I could visualize being one with my brother. The phrase that came to me was “wearing my body loosely.” I thought of easily shrugging off my body as one would a cloak, but then what I saw was a body shaped mass of light. I am so attached to my body and to the idea of me as a body, I am having trouble releasing this idea.

I thought about myself as light. I saw a light switched on in a dark room. The light has no shape, it diffuses until stopped by something, like the wall. I turn on another light. I don’t see two separate rays of light. The light blends seamlessly. I can’t tell what light comes from which lamp. It is just light.

So I visualized myself shrugging off the body and appearing as formless light that just goes on and on. Other lights join me; my ex-husband, my daughter, my manicurist. As light, there were no personalities, no alcoholics, no Vietnamese; there was just light. Not my light and their light, just light.

When I first started learning this concept, it didn’t mean much to me. I read it and said, “OK, I believe this,” but I didn’t really know what it meant. As time went on, and I practiced it, it became more meaningful. Now, I feel like I am so close. I almost know; which means I almost accept because in reality, I have always known. I think I have resisted that knowledge because of body identification; because of specialness and because I wanted to hold onto the idea I am unique. I’ve been wearing my body tightly, like a woman in a girdle, uncomfortable but afraid of losing my shape if I remove it.

I am going to practice my lessons faithfully and trust that the Holy Spirit will support my efforts and I will succeed.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 202 Insights
Review: “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”
“I will be still an instant and go home.”
I am in Heaven now. I am still as God created me. But I am still not aware of my Home as long as I choose to believe in separation. With the power of my mind, I experience a world of bodies and have forgotten my true Identity as an extension of God. Now I would reverse that. I would practice reinforcing the truth instead of the ego’s lies. I would practice opening to the Holy Spirit’s perception, Who sees past bodies to the Light of God that is always there.

Today’s practice helps me let go of identifying myself with a body. The more I repeat the words of today’s lesson, the more I let the truth sink in to my awareness. Repeating this lesson many times a day is very helpful. After a while it becomes an automatic thought. “I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.” It is like playing a piano where many, many repetitions help make it an automatic response.

I consider this series of lessons to be very important to my awakening. I have reinforced the ego for a long time. It is now time to reinforce the truth and awaken from dreaming of separation. I can still use the body for the Holy Spirit’s purposes, but I do not have to be lost in the dream. I do not have to think the dream is real. With the Holy Spirit’s guidance, I can see past the dream to oneness. I can find my Self.

Why would I not listen to the Voice for God in my mind That lovingly and gently calls me Home? Only fear would make me unwilling to listen. The fear is that my will and God’s Will are not the same and if I were to listen to His Voice, I would be called to sacrifice my will.

This is one of the ego’s central lies, for the ego is the idea of sacrifice and loss. As long as I think I am the ego, I think my will is in opposition to God. But each time I am able to allow myself to become peaceful for an instant and go Home to the loving Heart of God, my identification with the ego thought system is loosened. The more opportunities I give myself to experience an instant of peace in God, the less I am bound to the world’s thought system and the more real my Home in Heaven is to me.

Only my belief in another world makes Heaven seem distant and unreal to me. The simple practice of being still an instant to go Home is a gentle, step-by-step process of loosening the bonds I have placed on myself which bind me to a world of illusions of limitation that could never be real.

Today I will practice this lesson as often as I can to open my mind to the Holy Spirit’s Voice in my mind, for I know It leads me to the comfort and peace of God. It will help me remember I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 193 Insights
“All things are lessons God would have me learn.”
My continued belief in separation is a grievance against oneness. My belief in separation is the same as rejecting God. My holding on to all the different forms of separation that now appear to be real only brings me pain and conflict. Seeing conflict and pain and differences and death comes from the separated mind, the insane mind. My job now is to let go of the thoughts that come from the split mind that believes in separation.

Forgiveness means letting go of illusions. As I practice forgiving or letting go of each different form of illusion that comes along, these illusions will disappear because they are made of nothing. Only my belief has held them in place. As I practice forgiveness or handing over every form to the Holy Spirit, I will receive a new perception. This perception reflects oneness. This perception reflects innocence and holiness.

If I am willing, the Holy Spirit shows me where I have been mistaken. Forgiveness shows me that only Love is real. What is not real can be let go of easily without sacrifice or pain. I need to recognize all the places of unforgiveness still hidden in my mind. As I let each hour be an opportunity to find every form of unforgiveness and hand it to the Holy Spirit, my lessons are learned. I no longer need the ego’s lessons of another form of separation that might make me happy. The Holy Spirit’s lessons bring me freedom, joy and happiness. These are the lessons I would learn today.

Today’s lesson is a wonderful recipe for healing. It is exquisite in its simplicity and comprehensiveness. By hourly pausing to forgive the issues of the previous hour and moving ahead into the next hour clean and free, I will inevitably forgive and release all illusions. I don’t have to be concerned about digging up grievances from the distant past. Every grievance I hold will inevitably show up in some way in any given hour. And I have the opportunity then in that hour to forgive and let it go.

This practice is a wonderful gift. I only need to do it to make my life an accelerated path to freedom. Inconsistency in following this practice is just a reflection of resistance to accepting the happiness God has given me. This resistance I can also offer to the Holy Spirit for His help in letting it go. This is how I replace tears with happy laughter. This is how I replace a sense of weakness and vulnerability with the strength and certainty of God’s Love.

As I began my quiet time with the thought of today’s lesson, I was aware of many little concerns with how my body is functioning. None were ones that I would classify as frightening or life threatening, but all reflected a belief in vulnerability, which the Course tells me is really belief in death. As each one crossed my mind, I offered it to the Holy Spirit, asking His help to forgive and see it differently. As I continued this, I found myself feeling more peaceful and contented. I began to feel increasingly safe and loved as though I were cradled in God’s arms, and angels were singing me a lullaby.

Today I would practice this moment-by-moment, hour-by-hour, for I would receive God’s gift of Love and perfect happiness. My part is very simple. To every apprehension, every care and every form of suffering, remember, I will forgive and this will disappear.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 194 Insights
“I place the future in the Hands of God.”
This lesson is very comforting to me. When I remember my future is in God’s Hands, all concern, worry and anxiety fade away. If I look honestly at all my thoughts of worry or concern, they all come from a lack of trust in the future, which reflects what I believe the past has taught me. I believe the past has taught me things happened to me I didn’t want to happen. And other things didn’t happen I did want to happen. Thus all my concerns about the future are projections of the past.

Placing my future in the hands of God ends projection. My only hesitation comes from lack of trust in God. This lack of trust is just another reflection of old beliefs from the ego thought system. Even this is gently dealt with in this lesson. We are not expected to instantly no longer have ego-based thoughts or temptations. We are simply reassured that by placing the future in God’s Hands, these ego thoughts will be quickly replaced by Love’s reflection, which is forgiveness. Forgiveness is letting go of the past. And since the past is an illusion, forgiveness is letting go of illusion.

The more I am able to place my future in God’s Hands, the more I open my mind to the Holy Spirit’s gentle correction of my mistaken beliefs. With the future in God’s Hands, I no longer need to spend my days planning for my safety and my survival. They are in God’s Hands. All I need to do is maintain an open mind, a receptive mind, willing to receive Holy Spirit’s guidance and corrective perception.

As with yesterday’s lesson, by practicing each hour letting go of the mistakes of the previous hour, and putting the hour to come in God’s Hands, I become free. Each time a thought of worry enters my mind, I will use it as a reminder to place the future in the Hands of God. Thus I take what was used to make separation and fear seem real and change it into a stepping stone to freedom. With every concern, every apprehension, I remind myself, “I place the future in the Hands of God.” Thus I walk the path of forgiveness that leads me Home.

If I have any worries, it is always about something in the future. The Holy Spirit teaches me these worries are always groundless. We all are always safe, no matter what dreams we dream. We cannot separate from God. We cannot make a world of separation. It cannot be true. We remain safe eternally as God created us.

My dreams may frighten me, but they are not true. There is no past, there is no future, there is no sequential time. There is only the eternal now. Everyone is in Heaven now.

By placing my future in the Hands of God, I open my mind to the eternal truth that I am in God and remain in God eternally. This is eternal safety, eternal happiness, eternal peace. This is what is true. This is what is real. Anything else is wandering in the wilderness, dreaming of separation. God is. Love is. Nothing else is real. This is my comfort today. Today I am willing to surrender all my fear thoughts and return to the Love that is always true now and forever.

I have little sticky notes stuck everywhere in my house. It’s not exactly a Martha Stewart look, but they are very helpful to me because each one has some passage from the Course or some other spiritual book. They remind me often during the day of something I am working on. One of them reminds me that I choose not to make plans against uncertainties and I will add to it today’s lesson to place the future in God’s hands.

Thinking about how we connect everything to the past made me think about something that happened yesterday. I was shopping at Sam’s when I noticed a family shopping near me. The mom was reprimanding the teenager for something he was doing and the baby was crying, the father looked angry and the teenager looked halfway between hurt and defiant. I thought as I continued to shop that this was a familiar scene for them because they all looked comfortable in their roles. I understood this because this could have been my family a few years ago when my son was a young teenager, and we had played out a number of scenes ourselves.

Suddenly I looked back because the confrontation had become louder. I saw the mom pushing the cart away with the wailing baby in it and looking very angry and upset. The father and teenage son were standing toe-to-toe glaring each other down. They looked just moments from throwing punches.

I found myself moving quickly away from the situation. I didn’t want to see this. My son and his father had confronted one another more than once and I knew how bad this could be. The problem was resolved for my son and his father through anger management classes, but for a long time, life was very scary around our house. Watching this family’s drama unfold was extremely upsetting to me because I was replaying my past.

As I hurriedly moved away, my stomach tightening, my anxiety level quickly rising, I suddenly remembered my lesson; “All things are lessons God would have me learn.” Immediately what was happening began to take on a new meaning for me. I had a conversation with myself. At first I berated myself for my reaction and said to myself I shouldn’t feel like this. Then my calmer inner voice reminded me that I feel what I feel. “Okay,” I said, “I shouldn’t react like this. It isn’t helpful.” I was still a little upset so I continued the lesson with, “I will forgive and this will disappear.” I felt myself releasing the anxiety that had held me so tightly just moments before.

I then asked myself what reaction would be appropriate in this situation. What would be helpful? I began to pray for that family. I began to see peace descending on them and enfolding them. I realized that I had been feeling angry and resentful of them because of my reaction and all the unpleasant memories it brought back. As I prayed for them all that melted away. I felt very loving toward them and my prayers became more heartfelt. I can still see their faces very clearly, and I am going to continue to visualize peace and forgiveness for them.

I’ve been thinking about how all that played out. If I had not been doing my lesson, it may have been just another unpleasant moment which would leave me depressed. I would have also been angry with my ex-husband all over again. Instead, I chose to use that moment and that situation to practice releasing the past through forgiveness. I chose to bless that family, and in doing so, to bless mine as well. I feel so grateful that I was in that place at that moment and so was afforded the opportunity to heal.

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity to
Accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And the Wisdom to know the difference.

“Lord, make me a channel of they peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.”

ACIM Workbook Lesson 195 Insights
“Love is the way I walk in gratitude.”
A key idea brought up several times in this lesson is that Love makes no comparisons. Comparison is a way of setting things apart. So comparison is a reflection of unforgiveness. If I have forgiven my brother, I have let go of the idea that he is separate from me. It is impossible to compare what is one. There must be an ‘other’ for a comparison to be made.

Each time I recognize my brother shares the same need to Love I have, my forgiveness or letting go of illusion is strengthened. Everyone in the world needs to Love, because Love is what we all are. Yet the world was made to be a place without Love, where Love/God is excluded. And so we wander the world searching for Love because we hear the call from our heart to return to Love. Forgiveness is the means in this world to remove the barriers to Love’s Presence. That is why when forgiveness is complete, gratitude is complete, because Love is complete.

As I learn to look past the behavior I disapprove of, the words that seem to hurt, and see the Love I share with all things, gratitude fills my heart. I no longer need to defend. I no longer need to compare myself with anything or anyone. The full recognition of the Love I am dawns upon my mind. The search is over. I have found what I am and what I am encompasses all of Life, for what I am is one with Love, my Source. Love fills me and is my strength. Love is my safety and my peace.

Today let me look upon my brother and see him as he is, with no thought of the past and no empty images that could ever contain his magnificent Light. Thus will I recognize my Self and I will walk in gratitude.

Inherent within the Love of our Source is oneness. Oneness is the truth. Because all is One Love, there are no differences, no exceptions. When I open my mind to accept this truth, the truth of God’s Love as being all there is, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude comes inherently with accepting the truth that God’s Love is all there is.

Today my practice is to be grateful for the truth of our oneness in God. I am grateful that the truth of oneness is real and nothing else is real. This opening to the truth brings me deep peace. God is One. No dreams can change that. Of this I am grateful.

I am thankful dreams of separation could never be true. I am thankful everyone is safe in God and their true Identity could never be changed from how God created them. I am thankful all that is real still resides in Heaven and has never left Heaven. I am thankful we cannot leave God, even though we may dream of separation. I am thankful Love is the only reality and dreams of separation could never be real. Remembering the Reality and Oneness of Love is the way I walk in gratitude. That is the essence of today’s lesson for me.

“Selfishness, self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our troubles. Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity, we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate. Sometimes they hurt us, seemingly without provocation, but we invariably find that at some time in the past we have made decisions based on self which later placed us in a position to be hurt. So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making.”

ACIM Workbook Lesson 196 Insights
“It can be but myself I crucify.”
I see today’s lesson as very empowering. It is teaching me that all power is in me. There is nothing external to me that can harm me. Nothing, no exceptions. This puts me fully in charge of my experience and it eliminates all belief in enemies. There is no external force in any form to battle against. There is nothing to defend against. All fear, all pain, all sorrow and guilt are products of my own thinking.

Since they come from my thinking, I can be free of them by changing my thinking. I need no external help but I do need to be willing to accept the Help that is in my mind, ready to teach me the difference between true and false, real and unreal. My freedom does not wait on time. It waits only on my willingness to let the Holy Spirit in my mind show me the Love behind all the forms of fear I have imagined. My own thoughts are the cause of all my distress.

In this world, we are taught and taught again that we must protect ourselves from myriad external forms of danger. Now we are being encouraged to recognize the true source of that perceived danger — our own thoughts. No longer need we be helpless victims. Our power is recognized once again as we accept it is our own thoughts that are the cause and we have the power to change our thoughts.

This is perhaps the most difficult part of changing our mind. We have so thoroughly taught ourselves that our thoughts are powerless that we need help in recognizing the falsity of this teaching. By the grace of God we have that Help. It is the Holy Spirit in our minds. He needs only our willingness to open to His teaching for Him to bring us the gift of new perception which shows us our strength, our innocence and our safety.

With His vision we see that only Love is real, that God is our Friend and our Father. Now we can walk with confidence and peace, knowing God goes with us wherever we go. We always have a Friend Who will show us the truth, Whom we can trust.

I have great gratitude for today’s idea, for by it I am able to recognize my true Strength, my Self, and recognize I am not an ego. I am in truth the extension of Love I was created to be.

This lesson reminds me how important it is to really look at the thoughts I am putting my belief in. It is these thoughts that create my experience. As long as I continue to believe something outside is the cause of my experience, I am denying my salvation and putting up a barrier against God.

It is only the ego’s thought system that generates the idea there is anything outside myself. My job now is to expand my willingness to remember it is always an inside job. As I am willing to monitor my thoughts, I will soon learn to recognize when I am joining with the ego thought system. Joining with this thought system is the same as crucifying myself.

The Course tells me it does not take a thousand years to undo the ego thought system. The time is shortened when I am willing to look at ego thoughts and take them to the Holy Spirit to be undone. This needs to be my consistent practice, the one habit I consistently apply to every concern, every anxiety, every circumstance where I am not in peace.

In reality, the world is nothing. My belief in separate bodies comes only from my joining with the ego thought system. It is only my thoughts that give a world “outside” me any meaning. I can practice today letting the Holy Spirit give the world all the meaning it has for me.
