Eye Opener (1950)
In spite of evidence to the contrary,
we still persist in wondering what would happen,
after our several months of sobriety, if we again took a drink.
We definitely know that we don’t want “a” drink.
We never did in our drinkingest days.
We know that we have graduated from the ranks of happy drinkers.
We know of no one in all our experience who has made the
experiment to his or anyone else’s satisfaction –
yet we might be the exception.
It is this type of curiosity that has killed many a cat. Don’t try it.
Even if you are right – you’re wrong.
Vernon Howard’s SECRETS OF LIFE
“You are learning to meet every experience as if it has no power to
cause distress, for it is in fact powerless.”

Therefore, Step Two is the rallying point for all of us. Whether agnostic, atheist, or former believer, we can stand together on this Step.
I feel that A.A. is a God-inspired program and that God is at every A.A. meeting. I see, believe, and have come to know that A.A. works, because I have stayed sober today. I am turning my life over to A.A. and to God by going to an A.A. meeting. If God is in my heart and everyone else’s, then I am a small part of a whole and I am not unique. If God is in my heart and He speaks to me through other people, then I must be a channel of God to other people. I should seek to do His will by living spiritual principles and my reward will be sanity and emotional sobriety.

Denial is the shock absorb-er for the soul.
It protects us until we are equipped to cope with reality.

I came here and you guys cared more for me until I could for myself.

I was happy enough to stay still
inside the pearl inside the shell,
but the hurricane of experience
lashed me out of hiding it made me
a wave moving into shore, saying loudly
the ocean secret as I went, and then
spent there, I slept like fog against
the cliff, another stillness.

Lesson 37
My holiness blesses the world.
This idea contains the first glimmerings of your true function in the world, or why you are here. Your purpose is to see the world through your own holiness. Thus are you and the world blessed together. No one loses; nothing is taken away from anyone; everyone gains through your holy vision. It signifies the end of sacrifice because it offers everyone his full due. And he is entitled to everything because it is his birthright as a Son of God.
There is no other way in which the idea of sacrifice can be removed from the world’s thinking. Any other way of seeing will inevitably demand payment of someone or something. As a result, the perceiver will lose. Nor will he have any idea why he is losing. Yet is his wholeness restored to his awareness through your vision. Your holiness blesses him by asking nothing of him. Those who see themselves as whole make no demands.
Your holiness is the salvation of the world. It lets you teach the world that it is one with you, not by preaching to it, not by telling it anything, but merely by your quiet recognition that in your holiness are all things blessed along with you.
Today’s four longer exercise periods, each to involve three to five minutes of practice, begin with the repetition of the idea for today, followed by a minute or so of looking about you as you apply the idea to whatever you see:
My holiness blesses this chair
My holiness blesses that window
My holiness blesses this body.
Then close your eyes and apply the idea to any person who occurs to you, using his name and saying
My holiness blesses you, [name].
When you know that beneath the wave of your Life is the great Ocean of Life,
then if you join the Bliss of God – then you are really living.
Paramahansa Yogananda
“One can no more set fire to the sea,
than convince people of the dangers of happiness –
And yet, we know that though the smallest shock is fatal
to the filled up bottle, that shock will not break
the empty one.”
