Exactly what is AA worth to you? Have you ever figured that out? Make a written list sometime of the benefits your have derived from your sobriety. Try hard to make an honest evaluation of what it would be worth to you in dollars and cents. How much have you benefited mentally, spiritually, physically, financially, socially?
Then make another list – how much has AA benefited by your membership? Are you trying to give as much as you have received? If not, you are getting something for nothing and that isn’t honest. You can never square the debt, but you can probably give it a little better try than you have been doing.
Vernon Howard’s SECRETS OF LIFE
“I will tell you a spiritual parable called: ‘He fell among evil
companions.’ My first query is could you add a chapter to that story
from your own personal life? Do you think that maybe there are up-
stairs evil companions that you haven’t learned to put out of your
house yet?
All right, listen; listen with a wish to find out how to be stronger
than the lazy occupants of your life. They’re lazy and don’t want to
be forced out into the streets where they have to start all over to
find another residence. You can learn how to say NO to them in the
first place. And as I tell you this spiritual parable, the purpose is
for you to uncover areas where you have been caught up in doing cer-
tain things, being forced, compelled to behave in certain ways while
there’s another part of you that wants nothing to do with the harm of
compulsive, mechanical behavior and the suffering that goes with it.”

We are not cured of alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.
The most common alcoholic fantasy seems to be: “If I just don’t drink, everything will be all right.” Once the fog cleared for me, I saw—for the first time—the mess my life had become. I had family, work, financial and legal problems; I was hung up on old religious ideas; there were sides of my character to which I was inclined to stay blind because they easily could have convinced me that I was hopeless and pushed me toward escape again. The Big Book guided me in resolving all of my problems. But it didn’t happen overnight—and certainly not automatically—with no effort on my part. I need always to recognize God’s mercy and blessings that shine through any problem I have to face.

No one knows what makes the soul wake up so happy!
Maybe a dawn breeze has blown the veil from the face of God.
Lesson 13
A meaningless world engenders fear.
Today’s idea is really another form of the preceding one, except that it is more specific as to the emotion aroused. Actually, a meaningless world is impossible. Nothing without meaning exists. However, it does not follow that you will not think you perceive something that has no meaning. On the contrary, you will be particularly likely to think you do perceive it.
Recognition of meaninglessness arouses intense anxiety in all the separated ones. It represents a situation in which God and the ego “challenge” each other as to whose meaning is to be written in the empty space that meaninglessness provides. The ego rushes in frantically to establish its own ideas there, fearful that the void may otherwise be used to demonstrate its own impotence and unreality. And on this alone it is correct.
