Bill Undercover
AA History
Among the odd jobs that Bill cited in Bill’s Story was his mention of working on a farm for a month. During 1925, Bill and Lois took off on a trip down the east coast inspecting companies to see if their stock might be good Wall Street investments. They camped up and down the coast and carried all of their belongings in the Harley-Davidson motorcycle and sidecar that Bill had purchased. At the end of April 1925, they stopped at the Goldfoot family dairy farm in Scotia, New York near Schenectady. Mr. Goldfoot had two sons, both of whom worked for General Electric, a company that Bill was able to penetrate for investment investigation by befriending some of their employees during that month. They also worked for the Goldfoots to earn some money to continue on this most successful trip. Lois later acknowledged that she hadn’t cared if they earned a cent on the trip. She had been hoping the fresh air and the hobo lifestyle would help Bill slow up on his drinking.

“Would you like to reply to a foolish world with power and poise?
You can.
  Thoughtfully read the seven answers. _Remember, you do not actually
speak the answers aloud to another person_. The answers are designed
to build right and strong attitudes within you. And, of course they
are not said as angry accusations; you are merely seeing obvious facts
about the person. These silent answers will build your firmness and
understanding. You will learn how to avoid the traps of cunning people.
 These answers are really very kindly, for they come from a high source
of strength and wisdom. It is weakness and confusion toward people that
is unkind, for it keeps them undeveloped. So have no guilt in seeing
thru deceitful men and women. You have a right to free spiritual speech,
and it returns a rich inner reward. When you truly understand a harmful
person you are free of him, so let these answers dissolve all problems
with people.
The world has a desperate need for strong people who know and live the
real answers to life. Be one of them.”
 1. Please do not use my personal affairs for your private entertainment.
 2. What do you secretly expect in return for your help?
 3. You pretend to help because you know of nothing else to do with
 4. The greatest help you can give me is to leave me alone.
 5. If I wish your help I will ask for it.
 6. How would you feel if I asked you a personal question like that?
 7. Your kind of help just adds to the problem.”

The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity to
Accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And the Wisdom to know the difference.
We were now at Step Three.
 Many of us said to our Maker, as we understood Him:
“God, I offer myself to Thee – to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the
bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them
may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy
will always!”
We thought well before taking this step making sure we were ready; that we could at last abandon
ourselves utterly to Him.
Seventh Step Prayer
-The Seventh Step Prayer is from page 76. The Big Book
   When ready, we say something like this:
“My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now
remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you
and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen.”
We have then completed Step Seven.

St Francis Prayer
-From Chapter 11 of “Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions”
“Lord, make me a channel of they peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.”
St. Francis Assisi (1182-1228).

“The answer to life is not to develop
a metaphysical system to explain
why God is good but to live here
and now in the goodness of God.”
Ernest Holmes
I remember seeing a friend of mine, Randy
saw him up on the hill flying kites with his little boys.
I ask him how he had changed so much
I’ve been going to that A and A thing.

Grace is the ability to redefine the boundaries of possibility.

It is also narrated that Rumi had requested his funeral prayer to be lead by Sheikh Sadreddin of Konya . When the Sheikh came to the front for the prayer, Tabib Akmaladdin warned the people by saying “Mind your manners and be respectful. He was the Sultan of the true sheikhs; that is who has passed away.” Sheikh Sadreddin, after hearing this, was moved to tears and could not continue with the prayer; instead it was Qadi Sirajaddin led the prayer.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 2 Insights
“I have given everything I see in this room [on this street,
from this window, in this place] all the meaning that it has for me.”
The idea for today is very empowering. Because it is we who have given all the meaning everything we perceive has for us, we have the power to change its meaning. Thus, salvation is in our hands. Our release is not dependent upon what anyone else does. Our release comes with changing the meaning we give to anything and everything. Thus this idea is the cornerstone of the foundation for forgiveness and healing.
Much of the Text and the Workbook lessons are there to help us see the truth of this statement. Yet whether or not we accept it as true at this point is not essential. However, doing the exercise as specified is essential, for it is one more step in opening our mind to complete release from bondage and return to the Heaven of our holy mind.
The process of complete reversal of our thinking is done step-by-step. Impatience is of the ego. Disappointment is of the ego. Stress is of the ego. Our mind is yet undisciplined and so there may be some effort required to bring discipline to it. But excessive effort can be used by the ego as a means to discourage us from continuing on with our mind healing. That is why these early lessons appear to be very simple and trivial to us.
They are not trivial. It is helpful not to confuse simplicity with meaninglessness. The ego thrives on complexity. It is the Holy Spirit Who will show us that what appears to be complex always comes down to one single problem and a single solution. For today, our job is to simply practice the exercise with gratitude that we are taking an important step in our healing.
The things that have the most meaning to me now had no meaning to me a decade ago. And these things are sitting in a park, walking in the woods, sunny days, a drive in my car on a beautiful fall day… But there are meanings here too. And I have assigned them. And when I don’t get to enjoy these things that I have placed so much meaning on, I get upset, frustrated, hurt. I feel angry and victimized.
But ten years ago when these things, the sunny days and fall drives — the sitting in the park and walking in the woods — had no meaning to me. I didn’t feel victimized or angry, upset or frustrated. I didn’t care at all. Hmmm? Next time I get upset over something that I have assigned meaning to, I think I will remember a time when that thing had no meaning or a different meaning to me. I’m sure that will change my perception quite a bit, or at least give me food for thought.
After reading the lesson I went to the Holy Spirit for more insight. I received the following:
I sit in silence waiting for your allowing of My meaning. I wait for your recognition that the worldly meanings you chose mean nothing. They do not exist. They are thoughts projected from your mind, nothing more. These meanings came from the past. Choose Me in the now. Let My meaning come to you now. My meaning will bring you joy, happiness and healing. Your meaning ties you to pain, sorrow and judgment. Let Me love you into growing beyond your old attachments, your old meanings. Accept responsibility for your choice, your ability to choose. And then choose Me. See all things for the nothingness they are, for they are not of Me. But I can give meaning anew that will serve you better, that will show you truer perspective of what is. Wait no longer to let go of the old and let Me give you something bright and shiny to replace it.

This show has a purpose: that you learn how to play the various parts of the life movie without identifying your Self with your role. It is important to avoid identification with pain or anger or any kind of mental or physical suffering that comes. The best way to dissociate yourself from your difficulty is to be mentally detached, as if you were merely a spectator, while at the same time seeking a remedy. Don’t expect to attain unalloyed peace and happiness from earthly life. This should be your attitude: no matter what your experiences are, enjoy them in an objective way, as you would a movie.
