 Eye Opener (1950)
Man is the only animal that smiles,
and he is the only one that has need of it.
Not that God provided more for the animal
kingdom than He did for us.
But man, through the stupid misuse of his willpower
and his other advantages, has brought misfortunes
upon himself that would be unendurable but for the
healing balm of smiles and a sense of humor.
No man is completely beaten as long as he can smile,
and we know from past experience that we can
wade out of most of our messes on the stepping stones of good-humored grins.

the old nature does not want you to do, such as persisting in
inner work”

The unity of Alcoholics Anonymous is the most cherished quality our Society has. . . . We stay whole, or A.A. dies.
Our Traditions are key elements in the ego deflation process necessary to achieve and maintain sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous. The First Tradition reminds me not to take credit, or authority, for my recovery. Placing our common welfare first reminds me not to become a healer in this program; I am still one of the patients. Self-effacing elders built the ward. Without it, I doubt I would be alive. Without the group, few alcoholics would recover.
The active role in renewed surrender of will enables me to step aside from the need to dominate, the desire for recognition, both of which played so great a part in my active alcoholism. Deferring my personal desires for the greater good of group growth contributes toward A.A. unity that is central to all recovery. It helps me to remember that the whole is greater than the sum of all its parts.

We cannot know peace until we know
that the Spirit is the only cause,
medium and effect in our lives….
Evil has no history and is never
entered into the being or the experience of reality .

 Rigidity always binds fear.

Turn your wounds into wisdom.
Holiness comes wrapped in the ordinary.
There are burning bushes all around you.
Every tree is full of angels.
Hidden beauty is waiting in every crumb.
This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor. Welcome and attend them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.

Lesson 31
I am not the victim of the world I see.
Today’s idea is the introduction to your declaration of release. Again, the idea should be applied to both the world you see without and the world you see within. In applying the idea, we will use a form of practice which will be used more and more, with changes as indicated. Generally speaking, the form includes two aspects, one in which you apply the idea on a more sustained basis, and the other consisting of frequent applications of the idea throughout the day.
Two longer periods of practice with the idea for today are needed, one in the morning and one at night. Three to five minutes for each of these are recommended. During that time, look about you slowly while repeating the idea two or three times. Then close your eyes, and apply the same idea to your inner world. You will escape from both together, for the inner is the cause of the outer.

Spiritual success comes by understanding the mystery of life;
and by looking on all things cheerfully and courageously,
realizing that events proceed according to a beautiful divine plan.
Paramahansa Yogananda
He began my creation with constraint,
By giving me life he added only confusion;
We depart reluctantly still not knowing
The aim of birth, existence, departure.”
