Our sobriety is dead-serious.
It has to be, to work at all.
With it we can retain all we now have,
and the limits to which we can add to
it are circumscribed only by our initiative
 and our ability.
Without sobriety we are in danger of losing
 that which we already have.
Sobriety is life itself to us and without
it life would again become a living death.
 To unnecessarily subject ourselves to
temptations is another variation of playing
 “Russian Roulette.”
Vernon Howard’s SECRETS OF LIFE

“There are many cosmic secrets which a man cannot be told until
he is ready to receive them. When he is ready for great things,
he will surely have them. The process starts when a man stops
trying to change the truth in favor of letting the truth change
him. He then becomes a psychic magician who performs the fine
feat of turning painful puzzles into healing revelations.”

January 7
Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We asked His protection and care with complete abandon.
Every day I stand at turning points. My thoughts and actions can propel me toward growth or turn me down the road to old habits and to booze. Sometimes turning points are beginnings, as when I decide to start praising, instead of condemning someone. Or when I begin to ask for help instead of going it alone. At other times turning points are endings, such as when I see clearly the need to stop festering resentments or crippling self-seeking. Many shortcomings tempt me daily; therefore, I also have daily opportunities to become aware of them. In one form or another, many of my character defects appear daily: self-condemnation, anger, running away, being prideful, wanting to get even, or acting out of grandiosity.
Attempting half measures to eliminate these defects merely paralyzes my efforts to change. It is only when I ask God for help, with complete abandon, that I become willing—and able—to change.

Willingness = a readiness to change
one’s perception.

Lesson 7
I see only the past.
This idea is particularly difficult to believe at first. Yet it is the rationale for all of the preceding ones.
It is the reason why nothing that you see means anything.
It is the reason why you have given everything you see all the meaning that it has for you.
It is the reason why you do not understand anything you see.
It is the reason why your thoughts do not mean anything, and why they are like the things you see.
It is the reason why you are never upset for the reason you think.
It is the reason why you are upset because you see something that is not there.
Old ideas about time are very difficult to change, because everything you believe is rooted in time, and depends on your not learning these new ideas about it. Yet that is precisely why you need new ideas about time. This first time idea is not really so strange as it may sound at first.

Beyond the land of peace beyond the land of dreams,
beyond the land of silence, lies of the garden of self-realization.
