JULY HEARD AT MEETINGS

When I was a kid I drank a gallon and 

a half of apple juice thinking I could get drunk. 
I peed the bed that night.

I checked into treatment I was going
through the DTs evidently I did something
 really out of order and they threw me out at 3 a.m. .

I wandered around and passed out,
woke up and had been robbed. 
I called the cops and when they got 
there they said ‘do you know where you’re at?’,
I said ‘no’, and they said ‘you’re in Mayor Wright housing’.

Today I have a whole new group of friends
 and we go traveling to the different islands
 and meetings together.

The group voluntold me for GSR. 
Anonymous

I wish to claim that these steps are a 
road map to where I want to get in life.

I followed the steps that were suggested to me.

I got tired of being sick and tired 
of being sick and tired.

I went into a bar called The Quiet Woman. 
Behind the Bar was the Torso of a woman, headless.

If you don’t take the risk you’ll never know the joy.

I Had my first meeting and there were 
several people over 5 years and I thought 
they were all smoking pot.

I always let people know that everything 
was their fault and was unwilling to trust
my own perception of the truth.

I would wake up wondering where my 
car was and when I would find it. I looking
 for scratches and things like that on it, 
there were usually were several scratches.

I come from a religious dysfunctional family.

My first meeting I parked my motorcycle 
right outside the meeting. 
I had long hair and a beard down to here.

He asked me if I believe the ocean 
was more powerful than myself and I said ‘yes’, 
and he said do you believe that AA and the 
fellowship can help your alcoholism and I said ‘yes’, and he said, ‘congratulations you’ve done the third step’.

The first thing I want to do is fight, 
I have these feelings that go to my brain. 
It takes years for them to get to my frontal lobe.

At 5 I went to public school and hit 
my teacher with the chair, 
I couldn’t go to public school again.

We are delusional when we get here, 
if you don’t believe that stick around 
and listen for a while.

They said ‘have you ever hugged your father
and told him you loved him’?, 
I said ‘what’?, you got to be kidding’.

I was leaving the house and I turned and hugged 
to my father and said ‘I love you’, 
something happened to me then, 
and I never leave the house without telling them that I love them.

I read every Bible several times, the Quran, 
the Kabbalah text and never found a religion 
that comes close to what I hear in these rooms.

I thought my whole life for centeredness, 
I, we, are about 20% off center and I can identify with it.

I remember one guy saying to me if you’re all there, what the f*** are you doing here.

One guy had seven years and had a drink 
and the next day ended up in prison.

People would always tell me what I did tonight before and I would say that’s not cool. This went on for years.

I was always afraid of what I would do.

This one guy came on board the ship and 
had penises tattooed all over his face. 
He had been in a blackout and had to be told.

My problem was that every time I would 
go to pray I would think of an old man 
and visualize these different faces.

He told me that part of conversation was listening, 
go figure. Anonymous I was in Las Vegas and I 
was really drunk and I kept calling Billy Crystal because I thought he was my waiter. And I was also telling Julius Erving how to play basketball.

I tend to think I can park wherever I want and have a lot of parking tickets to prove it.

I tried all these different things and finally became a Jesus Freak which is what I am now.

my wife and I was so hungover and smelled 
so horribly of liquor that I was grateful to be in this Fellowship.

I don’t know why but my higher power plucked 
me out of the abyss of Hell.

Long before my first drink, at 3, I felt different,
that I would never fit in. But overall it was pretty dark.

My first real scare was after I took Step one

It was Christmas break and someone gave me a 
Valium and within two months I was in
Castle hospital going through the DTs.

have to remember that my thinker is busted.

I have a disease and the way I can 
combat it is about growing spiritually.

I had a vision that my disease was in a house

It’s my birthday month and I really just wanted to go into seclusion. Then of course I got a call yesterday and here I am. Anonymous

I had a taste of wine when I was 14 and I thought what’s the big deal?

In a couple of years I was binge drinking and I got a call from a guy, a strange guy and he said that I needed to slow down my drinking.

I grew up, got married, to a fellow drunk and it didn’t kgo so well.

When I got out of treatment my sponsor said that we’re going to go through your house to make sure you have no alcohol. So I had to come up with a backup plan.

I started treatment and sat there and started noticing all the differences but after a few weeks I started looking for the similarities.

My sponsor had gone out and someone told me to get on the phone,take that list of numbers that I had, and call someone. Anonymous

I found that his problem is not my problem and I changed, he changed, and it had to do with an attitude adjustment. Anonymous

It was hard to pick up the phone but I said to myself, it’s working for them, maybe it will work for me.

The ambulance guy came by, knocked on the door, I answered, and he said ‘Oh, I thought it was you’. The guy downstairs had fallen down the stairs.

 She said, ‘go to work the program works everyday from 9 to 5. Anonymous

I had no problem admitting I was powerless over alcohol, it did for me what I couldn’t do for myself. Then it started doing things that were unmanageable.

After I worked the steps they told me that I had to find someone whose life is unmanageable, I met with him once a week and still do now.

I got out of my marriage with nothing 
but that didn’t stop me. 
Anonymous

I had seven brothers and sisters, 
two died from the disease and a 
couple of our religious and happy.

The meeting didn’t get me sober, the steps did. 
Anonymous

He told me that it will take me 5 years 
to get my marbles back and 5 years 
to learn how to play with them.

I was invited to the White House and
if I hadn’t been sober I would have robbed them.

One thing about Step 2 is that God goes with me wherever I go.
I can stand up and claim my seat today.

If your new I hope you hear something 
here today that takes the fun out of your drinking.

Someone said at the Happy Hour
that if you don’t get in trouble you don’t get arrested.

I wanted everyone in my family to get the program,

God is God, makes no difference how

I start off with the third step prayer in the shower. I stay in the shower until I get it right. My water bill is pretty high now. Anonymous

My therapist told me to meditate 4 times a day. 
I practice prayer more than meditation. 
I try mindfulness which is nothing more
than staying in the moment.

All that junk in my trunk keeps coming
 up and I can make a stew stew or Let It Go.

I can see who your God is by the 
way that you treat me.

At 15 I walked into a bar and asked for a beer.

Rarely did I drink that I didn’t pass out.

I was going to run my truck into an overpass and commit suicide. That’s when God intervened in my life.

I went to AA and everyone talked about God and 
I thought, they all talk about God and ‘there must be something to that’.

Today I try not to pick and choose what I’m going to do in that book.

I got on my knees and said ‘God please help me’, 
I called Captain Kirk and he said he thought that I was dead.

When I came back to the fellowship they welcomed to me like a Conquering Hero. Anonymous

I was so anxious to burn my 5th step and then later realized that it would have helped me with my 8th and 9th.

On making my amends, I went to a store, gave the man an envelope with money in it and told him what I had done. And he said, ‘do you want a receipt for this?’

I went back to school, got a bachelor’s in accounting and then went back and got a master’s degree.

I think before I ever picked up that first drink

I’ve never missed a surf because of AA,
 and I’ve never missed a meeting because of the surf.

My sponsor told me that I was carrying
 a bag of my back with all the resentments,
fears and anxieties of my life and all I had 
to do was empty the bag.

I told my boss that I can’t not drink, I had just told the guy I hated the most of my deepest secret.

He said I understand, but there is something we can do to help you.

The little snot thingy started coming out of my body and I hollered “God help me” and all the sudden those little snakes and creatures went away.

If I repeat myself in the telling of my story 
I’m actually telling the truth.

We were a roving pack of wild young people

I couldn’t stand to stay in my own skin 
but I kept seeing people go out and dying.

Somehow my higher power said that this

children and still get to Seven meetings a week.

cruise and we are the only three of our family sober.

pointed what I wanted. I was a daddy’s girl.

By the time I was 9 my mom would drive 
around town looking for Dad and I.

Dad decided to buy a bar so Mom couldn’t 
get us out of the bars now.

When I was eleven, I could get all my friends cigarettes, 
alcohol, whatever.

If you were boring I would tell you to go and drink more, 
not even caring about my father anymore until he got sick.

 I would spend one week with a family 
and then the next with another.

==================
I started my own business at 17 with my brother, 
he had the money. 
Anonymous

Someone passed me cocaine at a party and I said, 
why not, it’s my country’s main product. 
Anonymous

My mom set me down and told me that the cocaine 
was going to kill me so I came to the US when I was 26. 
Anonymous

Even though I didn’t speak English,
the alcohol and drugs always came to me. 
Anonymous 
==================
I started going to meetings and went to 
meetings everyday for 90 days, three times a day. 
Anonymous 
==================
They taught me that I wasn’t a victim. 
Anonymous

Today I have a big bag of tools that you guys gave to me. 
Anonymous

You can’t fix the problem you’re not aware of. 
Turns out I was the problem. 
Anonymous

I’m a small lady but I could drink the biggest 
and baddest and drunks under the bar.

My oldest brother committed suicide and
 my younger brother was murdered.

I had a lot of excuses for why I could drink.

All you guys with 30 and 40 years kept coming back 
and I wondered if you would ever get it.

I didn’t want to go back to that other way of living, that had been my life, 
my only way of life.

I came and I started believing in myself. 
You are the sunshine of my life.

One day this guy told me that I was frequently
wrong but never in doubt.

I found it being sober wasn’t as easy 
as camouflaging my life.

I always blamed everyone who came in contact with me.

My attitude was that if you had a family like mine, 
you would drink too.

No one wanted me around anymore and 
I was introduced to the fellowship for the first time at 16.

I always found an excuse, 
it was always someone else’s fault.

Today I don’t have to blame my mom for anything.

Someone told me that a closed mouth doesn’t get fed.

I’ve been through a lot of pain and most of that was self-inflicted.

I went to work in a bank and they started showing 
me the different pass codes, they had no idea.

I will never drink tonight, I will never drink tonight, 
I will be like normal people.

We Japanese eat rice, not lice, 
for us of the r is very difficult.

My father and my wife took me to the hospital 
where I went into delirium tremens.

I shut the doors when I was around three or four years old.

His story was the same as my story, I was shocked.

When I drink I feel like my door was closing, closing, closing. In AA I feel all my doors opening. Anonymous

To me, it was how can I get out of this feeling.

I have to confess that I’m very obsessed
 with Alcoholics Anonymous. 
It’s about learning to go through 
hell and come out the other end.

When I moved to Canada I thought it would be lonely and realized that I had been lonely all my life.

For me it was sex drugs and rock and roll with a whole lot of alcohol.

I got thrown into juvenile hall a lot and finally came into the program at age 14.

how I know what’s going on.

was 40 I never drew a sober breath.

He was my former teacher, he eventually paid my high school 
fee and tutored me to graduation.

teaching kids who had the same problems that I had.

My biggest challenge is my relationship with my Higher Power.

I had four DUIs by the time I was 28.

On the construction job they said if it rains we drink,
 it was Heaven.

I came too after driving into a embankment 
and my friends body next to me. I was arrested 
and got a DUI and two more right after that.

I thought it was normal to drink hard, Party hard, 
and you guys were strange to me.

The sheriff came looking for me,
I was facing 5 years and I wanted
 to commit suicide and they told me 
I needed to go to treatment.

I went to treatment and they introduced 
me to Alcoholics Anonymous again.

I went to a picnic at the Happy Hour 
and it was my first picnic ever, sober.

I had to come back to this program and do it honestly, 
I don’t do honestly good.

My sobriety was actually challenged and 
this is the second time to speak this month. 
I  had to face my own crap, I wanted to run. 
I lost a lot of money. I stuck around and I
have a better relationship with my wife now.
