Eye Opener (1950)
When we take the first drink, we invite the dead certainty of physical illness, untold sorrows, shame and degradation. That first drink has built more hospitals, jails, poorhouses and insane asylums than any other cause. All the drinks that follow are simply compounding the felony.
There are some people that can drink intelligently, but these people avoid difficulties. We are not in that class, and experience has proven it. Years of sobriety will not enable us to join that class and, again, experience has proven it. Why do you persist in trying, what are you trying to prove? That you are the exception to the rule? If you are the exception, you automatically become a freak.
Vernon Howard’s SECRETS OF LIFE
“Whoever is contented with himself is superior to a wealthy king,
for the king cannot give him anything. The contented man is free
of the snare of gifts.”

Twenty Four Hours A Day MAY 4,2016
Thought for the Day
When I was drinking, I always tried to build myself up. I used to tell tall stories about myself. I told them so often that I half believe some of them now, even though I know they aren’t true. I used to hang around the lowbrow barrooms so I could feel superior to the other customers. The reason I always tried to build myself up was that I knew deep down in my heart that I really didn’t amount to anything. It was a kind of defense against my feeling of inferiority. Do I still build myself up?
Meditation for the Day
God thought about the universe and brought it into being. His thought brought me into being. I must think God’s thought after Him. I must often keep my mind occupied with thoughts about God and meditate on the way He wants me to live. I must train my mind constantly in quiet times of communion with God. It is the work of a lifetime to develop to full stature spiritually.
This is what I am on earth for. it gives meaning to my life.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may think God’s thoughts after Him. I pray that I may live as lie wants me to live.
We must learn to think in the Absolute.
This means to think independently of
any given or experienced effect.
“Judge not according to appearances.”
This thought strikes away the shackles
of bondage and finds a new cause at work.

Whenever we can manage to love without expectations,
calculations, negotiations, we are indeed in heaven.

ACIM Workbook Lesson 124 Insights
“Let me remember I am one with God.”
As I did today’s exercise, it was interesting to observe the ways my resistance played out. As I focused on the idea that I am one with God, I began to experience a hint, like being on the fringes of what it would feel like being one with God. It felt very calm, free from doubt and above all, loving. It was like being in love, without limiting that love to one special person. It was very safe. I would experience that hint of that feeling and then I would realize that my thoughts had wandered off to something in my physical world experience.
It was amazing the trivial things that would get my attention and I would follow the thought rather than stay with that calm, peaceful, certain, strong and loving feeling that I was experiencing with remembering I am one with God. Things like thinking about a movie or television show I had seen or thinking of something I needed to do or was planning for some time in the future. By the time I realized where my thoughts were, I was well into the identification with this world once again.
Just as the intricate works of a tiny watch arouse
our admiration for the watchmaker….
so when we see nature’s wonders we feel awed
by the hidden intelligence behind them.
