Eye Opener (1950)
It is almost a general rule that no one
achieves in life what they planned in their youth.
The great ambitions of our teens never seem to materialize.
In spite of all our plans, it is a safe bet to say,
however, that we are where we were intended to be,
doing the things that we were intended to do,
whether we like it or not.
Apparently we are not running the world.
It is very probable that we would have made
a terrible mess of it had we followed our wishes
and would have wound up a much bigger flop than we did.
No matter what our station in life,
we can daily thank God that it is no worse than it is.

To us, however, it represents far more than a sound public relations policy. It is more than a denial of self-seeking. This Tradition is a constant and practical reminder that personal ambition has no place in A.A. In it, each member becomes an active guardian of our Fellowship.
The basic concept of humility is expressed in the Eleventh Tradition: it allows me to participate completely in the program in such a simple, yet profound, manner; it fulfills my need to be an integral part of a significant whole. Humility brings me closer to the actual spirit of togetherness and oneness, without which I could not stay sober. In remembering that every member is an example of sobriety, each one living the Eleventh Tradition, I am able to experience freedom because each one of us is anonymous.
We finally saw that faith in some kind of God was a
part of our make-up, just as much as the feeling we have for a friend.

Vernon Howard’s SECRETS OF LIFE
“Recognize the recognizer. You have, each of you, within you at
this moment, a recognizer who can spot rightness at a glance, a
fast glance, a very fast glance.
But I want to tell you many, many valuable facts about the
recognizer within you and you. First of all, it is extremely
weak, wishy-washy. It is afraid of the virtues it beholds,
it fears being punished, it hangs back, it is passive, it
has no assertiveness to it, it has no strength. It can see
rightness – and I want to emphasize –
it can see the difference between what is true and what is false,
it can see it faster than a flash of lightning.
However, to have a weak wishy-washy uncertain recognizer can
do nothing for you to change you. The recognizer itself must
take on an additional force, wisdom, tenacity. The recognizer
that you now have, but which is so practically useless to you,
the recognizer of trueness must be changed from a weakling into
a dashing hero.
I’ve told you already a lot about the process of inner trans-
formation. I’ve given you an enormous clue that has escaped your
attention and your notice and has escaped your effort to do what
must be done with it. I’ve described the nature of your ability
to see and comprehend badness or goodness as it jumps up in front
of it, in a conversation, in a business proposal, in a male/female
relationship. It actually, factually knows what is spiritual and
what is virtuous, but it doesn’t want to do it, it doesn’t want to
be on the side of what is virtuous.
And I gave you a number of reasons for it,
one out of many being that it’s afraid that it’s going
to get punished and so the recognition of goodness sits back in the
crowd of people and hides itself in the crowd, not wanting to risk
the chance that the crowd of two hundred people might suddenly all
at once turn and look at the one who dared to stand up for truth
while all the hundreds of others were praising falsehood.”

Nothing need be added to and
nothing can be taken away from
the All Good which is forever expressing Itself in me.
Daily shall I receive its great blessings
and my soul shall rejoice forevermore.

Purify your eyes, and see the pure world.
Your life will fill with radiant forms.
Lesson 232
Be in my mind, my Father, through the day.
Be in my mind, my Father, when I wake, and shine on me throughout the day today. Let every minute be a time in which I dwell with You. And let me not forget my hourly thanksgiving that You have remained with me, and always will be there to hear my call to You and answer me. As evening comes, let all my thoughts be still of You and of Your Love. And let me sleep sure of my safety, certain of Your care, and happily aware I am Your Son.
This is as every day should be. Today, practice the end of fear. Have faith in Him Who is your Father. Trust all things to Him. Let Him reveal all things to you, and be you undismayed because you are His Son.
Buffeted by gusts of chance or drenched by rains of misfortune,
I nevertheless direct my mind to look always toward Thee.
Paramahansa Yogananda

“Heaven has not learned of my arrival,
and my departure will not in the least diminish it beauty and grandeur.
I will sleep underground, for us ephemeral mortals,
the only eternity is the moment and drinking to
the moment is better than weeping for it.”
― Omar Khayyám

“When the heart is filled with love everything
seems beautiful & delightful to us.”
